UNCLE CHEFFY – BEST PANIZZA IN TOWN

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I’ts our usual weekend bonding and Leslie mentioned that we try this Uncle Cheffy Brick Oven Global Cuisine in EastWood. This place is located at the 2nd floor of EastWood Mall along the terazza right beside Via Mare. This restaurant is being operated by the same people of Chef’s Quarter (Megamall) and Old Vine (EastWood Mall).

Uncle Cheffy can accommodate around 50 to 60 people while the outdoor can seat so much more. Rustic interiors with abstract paintings and a nice touch of pine wood decorated the walls. Waiters are very attentive and the best thing of all is its reasonable pricing.

Since my son, Gio, is a pizza addict, Cheese, Cheese and Cheese Panizza (Php495) is first on the list. Brick-oven baked, thin-sliced and made of mozzarella, parmesan, brie, cheddar, gruyere, blue cheese, herbs, and virgin olive oil. With it are alfalfa leaves, salsa, and arugula. The trick is wrapping these ingredients in the thin pizza and rolling it. The taste was divine. But of course, my sons, didn’t bother with these details. In just a few minutes the entire thing was gone. Aside from this panizza there are others to choose from like East Meets West and Larry’s Cravings.

For the main course, not to be missed is the Memphis Barbecue U.S. Beef Rib Finger. It comes with marbled potato and salad (Php595 per 1,000 grams). The beef was sooo tender and my son, Paulo, did not even have a hard time helping himself. It is perfect with the barbecue sauce.

Of course, the main course will not be as good with just the ordinary rice pilaf. We ordered the Mushroom and Brown Rice Pilaf (Php295). It made the beef rib even more flavorful.

After the entire meal the different desserts look very appetizing as well but we can only take so much. There is definitely a next time and with it will be the US Cheffy Steak Grilled and Roasted Rib Eye (Php1,950 / good for 5 persons).

Lunch or dinner in EastWood will definitely not be complete without trying Uncle Cheffy.

Location: 2nd floor EastWood Mall, Unit A216 & S201 Level 2, Eastwood Mall, Eastwood City Cyberpack, E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue (C5)
Pricing: Reasonable (Php250 to Php500) / big servings / all cards accepted
Seating capacity: 50 to 60 people inside
Tel. no.: (02) 219-7025

WOULD YOU DARE EAT SOMETHING THAT LOOKS LIKE TURD?

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

The first time I saw it I don’t even want to touch it. It doesn’t look appetizing at all. Imagine, black and coiled and your mind is already thinking of something truly disgusting. Then you have to put this in your mouth? But really somebody needs to it. And then I gave in.

Lo and behold, it is one of the best-tasting calamari I have tried. It is called “el Bulli”. It is calamari with black ink and dipped in aioli. Frankly, the first bite is the hardest to take but the second, third, nth would be a lot easier and you wouldn’t stop until you clean your plate. This is one of best appetizers Tapella is offering.

Tapella is one of the newest restaurants in Greenbelt 5. Owned by the same people of the popular Gaudi, the dish is mainly Spanish and their tapas and paella are outstanding. They likewise have a lot of wine choices. Friday nights is quite popular for their tapas and endless servings of wine for just Php600.

Typical of any restaurant serving paella, waiting time is quite long, but I tell you it is really worth the wait. They are serving five different types of paellas. For ourselves we tried the Manchego cheese, chicken, asparagus, and shrimp paella. The rice was cooked just right and the entire dish was very tasty.

Of course, while in Tapella never forget to order their incredible steak… medium-well for me.

Location: Greenbelt 5. The last restaurant side of Max Brenner and beside Terrace at the 5th (ground floor)
Seating capacity: Limited seats inside (less than 30) but outside is a lot better location during Friday nights
Pricing: Reasonable, ell Bulli at Php255. Paella from Php480 (Creamy seafood paella) to Php1,400 (Alaska king crab paella)

RICA’S

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Part of my bank job is to go to several provinces and orient different branches on our different card products. Of course, after such grueling presentation, we need to eat and sample the cuisines of these provinces. I have been to Cebu countless times but this is my first time to try Rica’s. The restaurant is nestled in the corner of Paseo Saturnino. The outside has Dedon inspired furniture while the inside is highlighted with a large glass wall which inscribes the latest menu. Meanwhile, the furniture is made of French inspired furniture with subdued colors and the walls are predominantly white. The entire place is quite intimate with the ambiance ideal for dates or quiet dinners.

Aside from the impeccable interiors, the food is to die for. Their complimentary focaccia stick is addictive especially combined with diced tomato and olive oil — a reorder seems to be mandatory :) . To quench one’s thirst especially during a hot summer there are lots of drinks to choose from but not to be missed is their dalandan shake. However, since dalandan is quite available in Manila, then the raspberry shake is a welcome change. The drink is not to sweet but definitely very refreshing.

For the main dish, their grilled cod is very good coupled with spinach leaves. The gambas has a spicy bite but will make you beg for more. But their piece de resistance is their salpicao with garlic rice. The beef is so tender with their seasoning so perfect which will make you crave for more — to good that I ordered a second.

Of course, even I am not a dessert person their apple pie with ice cream is such a sin to be missed.

Once in Cebu City Rica is a must stop. We were here during lunch and we were impressed. I am sure that a dinner here with wine and candle light and another salpicao will even be more memorable.

Just a tip, the food is so good that you will lost track of time just like what happened to me. You wouldn’t want dagger looks from your fellow plane passengers waiting for you late ass. Such a small price to pay for a second round of salpicao.

Next visit, I will try their wagyu burger :) .

Address: No. 1 Paseo Saturnino, Ma. Luisa Road, Cebu City
Tel. no.: (032) 236-3562
Reservations: not to much during weekday lunch but needed during weekends especially during dinners
Pricing: Manila standards – reasonable. Each main dish ranges from Php250 to 350.
Seating capacity: less than 30
Parking: Ample

COLORS AND TEXTURES OF BELLAROCCA

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

There are times that you see beauty on just simple things around you.

HALLOWEEN NIGHT IN AN ISLAND

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Really spooky. To knock your wits out to get some candy.

Nice preparation though to Hazel, Tricia, Martin and all the personnel of Bellarocca.

What a way to spend our last night.

BELLAROCCA AT NIGHT

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

My full night picture taking was ruined the other day by Santi (the storm). So I have to do it tonight at a very tight schedule since I will still be covering the more important Halloween party of the kids.

So here are few photographs of the mesmerizing evening. Night or day the place is truly magical.

BRANDED BELLAROCCA

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Armed with my AF-S Nikkor Macro lens I went around Bellarocca and click on the brands that are being used by the resort. I started with our Villa and went around the entire area.

It was a very interesting find.

Lots of things you can equate just looking at the brand right?

See for yourself.

MARINDUQUE

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

One of the must trips that you should do once you are in Bellarocca is the Boac tour. No this is not free or part of the package, this will set you back Php5,000, but I think it is necessary for one to know the city that host the famous resort. Also, in all our tours we try to imbibe the local color and culture.

Two hours after and we are in Boac, courtesy of a chauffered van, and of course our ever-reliable Bellarocca attendant, Marie. We went to the Marinduque Museum where you will see a few local artifacts (mainly stones, pottery and farm implements). After that we were too hungry and we just ate at an eatery just across the museum. The food was home made and a welcome break from the artsy presentation you see in the resort.

After the hearty meal, we walked to the Boac Cathedral. Unlike other Spanish made churches, the Boac Cathedral is fortress-like and on top of the hill which took my breath away literally (lack of exercise, har har). It was built in 1656, houses the miraculous Ina ng Biglang-Awa (Mother of Mercy), the province’s patron saint. Its carved, massive wooden doors are decorated with cherubs and the images of the Four Evangelists: John, Luke, Mark and Matthew. The church interior has been faithfully restored and made mainly of bricks. The church floor still bears the old Spanish made tiles and still houses the epitaph of famous local people and priests. A sight to behold is the retablo (altar decoration) which holds the different saints. Very few of these can be seen in churches nowadays.

Other places to see are the Monastery of Saint Clare which usually grants wishes and hear petitions. The Butterfly Farm in Gansan and the the souvenir shops. Unfortunately, aside from the paper made Moriones masks and other wooden knick knacks there aren’t much too buy as “pasalubong” since it is only now that Marinduque (aside from the yearly Moriones festival) is getting popular. Thanks to Bellarocca.

VILLA XANADU IN BELLAROCCA – THE BEST PLACE TO STAY

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

The name might be baduy (a song by Olivia Newton John) but the Villa is to die for. We are staying here for five days and the amenities and gadgets are on everybody’s wish list.

The only thing lacking is a bidet but I think they are already looking for one for installation.

Awesome is not enough to describe the experience.

THE DAY I FORGOT MANILA

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Breathtaking might not even suffice the word to describe the island. Immaculate white edifices sprouting in the lush greenery of the once called Elefante Island. Now the name has changed to Bellarocca – the beautiful rock.

It is like being transported to another world. Where problems don’t exist. Where nirvana seems to be at hand.

Finally, we are here.

I am home.
